The largest lake in Idaho! Lake Pend Oreille was glacially formed during the ice age. It is also believed that the eastern side of the lake was in the path of the ancient Missoula Flood. The lake is home to many species of fish.

The History of Sandpoint

Sandpoint’s history dates to the 1880s when Robert Weeks opened a general store in Pend Oreille (pronounced Pon-da-ray), a small settlement founded on the shores of the lake to the east of what is now Sandpoint. Before establishment of the general store, the first white man known to travel to the area was the explorer David Thompson who, with his partner “Big Finan” McDonald, established the first trading post on Lake Pend Oreille in 1809.

Getting to Sandpoint

Sandpoint is about 80 miles or so from the Spokane International Airport. Most major airlines in the United States and Canada fly direct to GEG. Also just two miles from downtown, the Sandpoint Airport provides a 5,500-foot paved runway. It is rated up to 40,000 pounds gross weight single-wheel load. Amenities and services include pilot’s lounge, courtesy cars, fuel, flight school and tiedowns.
